The wonders of Winter Glamping

When most people are hunkering down in bear-like hibernation and binge-watching the latest Netflix series, others are stepping into the magic of the season with winter glamping at Meon Springs.
Located in the heart of the South Downs National Park, Meon Springs offers a peaceful countryside escape that feels even more special during the colder months. While our Mongolian yurts are packed away for winter, our beautifully crafted Shepherd’s Huts remain open all year round, providing cosy, comfortable accommodation surrounded by nature.

A Perfect Winter Escape in the Hampshire Countryside
Our winter guests come for many reasons. Some couples enjoy the best of both worlds – with one heading off for a day of fishing on our well-stocked lakes while the other explores the surrounding countryside, local shops in Petersfield, or the historic streets of Winchester.
Others simply come to slow down, switch off, and reconnect with nature. Winter glamping strips life back to the essentials: crisp air, quiet landscapes, starry skies, and time to truly relax. It’s a chance to step away from the daily grind and appreciate what’s right in front of you.

Incredible Winter Wildlife at Meon Springs
Step outside your Shepherd’s Hut and you’ll find yourself immersed in nature. Winter is one of the best times for wildlife spotting, with regular sightings of:
Deer
Hares
Pheasants and partridges
Red kites and buzzards
With trees bare and vegetation thinner, animals are easier to spot as they search for food, making every walk around the lakes and surrounding farmland an adventure.

Spectacular Sunrises and Sunsets
One of the most talked-about highlights among guests and staff this winter has been the sky itself. Cold, clear days often bring breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, with deep red and golden hues stretching across the horizon.
Wrapped up warm with a hot drink in hand, there are few better ways to start or end the day than watching the sky light up over the South Downs.

Winter Walks That Feel Brand New
Even if you’ve visited Meon Springs in summer, the winter landscape offers a completely different experience. Familiar footpaths transform as trees shed their leaves and long-hidden views open up across the rolling countryside.
It’s quieter, calmer, and wonderfully refreshing – perfect for photographers, walkers, and anyone craving space to breathe.
Cosy Country Pubs Nearby
After a day outdoors, nothing beats warming up beside a roaring fire in a traditional village pub. Luckily, Meon Springs is surrounded by excellent options:
The Thomas Lord – West Meon
Ye Olde George Inn – East Meon
The Bucks Head, Meonstoke – just a short drive away, serving a fantastic menu and famous pizzas
These welcoming spots are ideal for hearty winter meals and relaxed evenings.

Embracing the Winter Weather
There’s an old saying: there’s no such thing as bad weather – only bad preparation.
Winter in the South Downs can bring crisp blue skies, but also rain, frost, and chilly winds. Pack plenty of layers, warm waterproofs, and don’t forget your wellies – they’re essential for countryside adventures.
This is the time to ditch the glam, embrace the outdoors, and rediscover your inner child by splashing through puddles and enjoying muddy boots.
Our Café by the Lake – Open All Year
Our welcoming café by the lake stays open throughout winter, offering the perfect place to warm up after a walk. Bolly is there every day to greet guests, anglers, and walkers with a smile, serving a range of hot and cold food and drinks.
It’s a cosy, homely spot to relax, recharge, and watch the wildlife from the warmth indoors.
