Do You Remember the Programme “How It’s Made”?

If you are of a certain age, you might remember the television programme How It’s Made – the fascinating series that showed the step-by-step process behind everyday objects. From chocolate bars to bicycles, it revealed all the hidden work that goes on behind the scenes before the finished product appears. Last week at Meon Springs felt a little bit like our own countryside version of How It’s Made, as the team began the exciting process of erecting the yurts for the new season. |

Every winter we carefully take our yurts down. Hampshire winters can be harsh, so packing them away protects the canvas and wooden frames from months of cold, wind and rain. Once dismantled, each yurt is thoroughly cleaned and safely stored away until spring arrives again. Then comes the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Last week the trailers came out and the process began. Each yurt is loaded individually onto a trailer and transported across the farm and down to the site. It’s very much a three-person job, with everyone needing to know their role. Putting a yurt back up is surprisingly quick when the team are working together. The main wooden frame goes up first, followed by the lattice walls and roof ring. The canvas skins and insulation layer are then carefully fitted over the structure. From start to finish it takes around two hours to erect each yurt. |
Once they are standing again on site, the yurts need a little time to settle. After being stored through the winter months, the natural materials relax back into place over about a week. That’s when the next stage begins. The interior fitting starts with installing the chimney and wood burner, followed by the beds and all the cosy soft furnishings that transform the structure from a simple frame into the comfortable countryside retreat that many of our guests return to year after year. This is where Alison and her team step in with their brilliant eye for detail. Cushions are plumped, throws are laid out, and every little finishing touch is carefully arranged so that when the first guests arrive everything feels warm, welcoming and ready for their stay. |

he preparations don’t stop with the yurts themselves. The Yurtery building, our communal kitchen space, also gets its annual spring refresh. Each yurt has its own fridge in the kitchen area, and the whole space is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the season ahead. The dedicated showers and toilets are also given a full spring clean so everything is ready for the first families arriving next week. It is, without doubt, a labour of love. Taking the yurts down every winter and rebuilding them each spring takes time and effort, but it allows us to protect these special structures and keep them in wonderful condition for years to come. |

It is, without doubt, a labour of love. Taking the yurts down every winter and rebuilding them each spring takes time and effort, but it allows us to protect these special structures and keep them in wonderful condition for years to come. And there is always something incredibly rewarding about seeing the first families of the season arrive – watching children run across the grass, hearing the first evening wood burners crackling, and knowing that people are here to enjoy a peaceful escape to the Hampshire countryside. |

With spring well and truly underway, bookings are already filling up quickly, particularly during the school holidays. If you’re thinking about a countryside break, it’s well worth securing your preferred dates early. We look forward to welcoming the first guests of the season very soon.

This was such a lovely behind-the-scenes look at how everything comes together. It must be so rewarding to see the yurts go from storage to a cosy retreat for guests again each spring Sprunki
