Conditions on the Lakes (Last update: 1.11.2008)

Water temperature
Coombe Lake 8°c, Whitewool Lake 9°c.

The wintry weather of late has really pushed the fish down with the result that they are seldom coming to the dry fly. Nymphs would be your best option, fished deep and slow. Pheasant tails, Hares ears, Diawl bach are among the best. However we all have our favourites so best advice is to fish a nymph that you have confidence in. it is important to have confidence in your flies, this will make you fish expectantly and attentively, getting more takes and missing fewer of them. For the lure fishermen among you this is the time of year when the lure will do best, bright colours down deep will serve you best. coral pink, white, orange and the lighter colours performing well in the clear, cold water. I cannot stress enough the importance of giving time to sink, don't forget fish will be deeper than what they appear from the surface. The single most important part of fishing a lure is to count it down until you start to get takes. Also try to avoid the mechanical retrieve, it is important that you make whatever nymph/lure you are fishing with has life and movement. think unpredictable, variety of retrieve- long pulls, short pulls and stop-start. one of the deadliest methods of catching fish is to use a booby. usually a reservoir method, there is no reason why it won't work on smaller stillwaters. on difficult, cold days if you have a fast sinking line in your armoury it is definitely worth a try, you may be surprised. short leaders and a jerky retrieve are the method, the fish find something irrestible about the way the fly will dive towards the bottom as opposed to the surface.
